CTLGroup worked with design-builder Skanska/Kiewit/Weeks (SKW) on the New Midtown Tunnel beneath the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth & Norfolk, Virginia. Specific services provided by CTLGroup included the development of project specifications and a thermal control plan for casting the concrete base slabs, walls, and roof slabs; concrete placement procedures and recommendations; service life analyses and confirmation testing; and review and provide recommendations regarding planned mockups.
CTLGroup worked with Parsons Brinckerhoff (now WSP), tunnel designer, to perform service life modeling, review mass concrete specification requirements. In addition, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) adopted CTLGroup’s mass concrete recommendations into their specifications.
