Reinforced Concrete Tank Inspection Methods

Description

CTLGroup was contacted by a major petrochemical company and asked to help develop inspection and risk assessment methods for above-ground reinforced concrete storage tanks. The request was prompted by recent concrete tank failures that occurred in the United States, one of which resulted in two fatalities at a wastewater treatment plant located in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

As an initial step toward addressing the overall primary objective, CTLGroup undertook an investigation of an exemplar concrete tank structure that was exhibiting cracking and leakage issues. The investigation plan included a field condition survey, nondestructive testing of key components of the structural system, and concrete material studies. The intent of this investigation was to use this structure as a “prototype” for developing an asset management plan for other similar concrete tank structures.
