Evolution of Building Code Requirements in the Post 9/11 World

Due to the September 2011 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center’s twin towers, several concerns unique to tall buildings subject to extreme loads were highlighted in the industry. Tall building performance observations included failure of active and passive fire protection systems, performance of egress systems, and importance of structural redundancy. Building code requirements have evolved sinccethese events, many of which have been incorporated by the international building code counsel.
