CTLGroup Relocates Corporate Headquarters and Laboratories, Initiates New Chapter in Company History

January 2, 2024

January 2, 2024 (Mount Prospect, Ill.) – CTLGroup, a globally-recognized engineering, architecture, and materials consulting and testing firm, announced today the successful relocation of its corporate headquarters and laboratories from Skokie, Ill. to state-of-the-art facilities in nearby Mount Prospect, Ill. This strategic move represents a significant milestone for the company, marking the beginning of a new era of growth.

The transition underscores CTLGroup’s dedication to improved efficiencies and increased collaboration among its expert consulting and laboratory staff, solidifying its position as an industry leader.

CTLGroup has entered a long-term lease for two new locations within the same business park: a cutting-edge laboratory at 1050 East Business Center Drive and a corporate headquarters office at 1660 Feehanville Drive in Mount Prospect. The corporate headquarters will also accommodate CTLGroup’s local engineering, architectural, and building materials consulting team.

New Laboratory Facility to Elevate CTLGroup’s Tradition of Expertise

A key highlight of this relocation is the consolidation of CTLGroup’s laboratories into a single, 52,000 square-foot facility. This modern laboratory is meticulously designed to house specialized units, including Analytical Chemistry, Concrete, Cement & Mortar, Petrography, Flooring, Non-Destructive Testing and Structural Health Monitoring, and its Structural Laboratory. This streamlined approach aims to optimize operations and provide clients with seamless and comprehensive service.

The facility boasts state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, ensuring CTLGroup maintains its commitment to delivering true expertise to clients. Notably, the 4,000 square-foot strong floor is designed to support the structural loads of larger components, enhancing the firm’s capabilities in structural testing.

Dr. Boyd Clark, Vice President of CTLGroup’s Laboratory Services, expressed enthusiasm about the move, stating, “This relocation is a pivotal moment for CTLGroup. By bringing our diverse laboratories under one roof, we are poised to offer unparalleled expertise. This move is a testament to our commitment to excellence and our continued pursuit of pushing the boundaries of what is possible in materials consulting and testing.”

Honoring a Century of Innovation and Contributions to the Concrete Community

CTLGroup, originally established in 1916 as the cement and concrete technology Research and Development Laboratories of the Portland Cement Association (PCA), has a rich history of innovation and major contributions to the construction community.

In the 1960s, CTLGroup expanded its consulting services, continuing to evolve through the 1980s. The 1970s saw the initiation of research on using fly ash and other supplementary cementitious materials in concrete, gaining momentum today for its potential to reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.

The firm gained national attention in 1985 when NASA provided lunar soil for investigative research, confirming its excellence as an aggregate for making concrete. In 1986, CTLGroup began serving outside clients independently, expanding its scope of service beyond concrete.

CTLGroup has been involved in significant projects, including condition evaluations of the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial in 1990, investigations of the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, the World Trade Center collapse investigation in 2001, and the restoration of the historic Frank Lloyd Wright designed Unity Temple in 2003. The firm played a crucial role in 2010 analyzing the effects of concrete creep for the design of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and has conducted comprehensive structural and materials investigations of antenna pedestals for the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Deep Space Network since 1983. In 2021, CTLGroup responded in the aftermath of the tragic collapse of the Champlain Towers South condominium in Surfside, Florida, serving as the structural and materials experts for the victims’ families in the civil litigation.

Dennis McCann, Ph.D., P.E., President at CTLGroup, recognized that past and present staff’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping CTLGroup’s legacy.

“Our decision to relocate is rooted in a strategic vision for the future. As we embark on this new journey, we carry with us the rich history of contributions to the concrete community that has defined CTLGroup for over a century. The collective knowledge and passion of our team drive us to make even greater contributions to the industry in the years to come,” said McCann.
