North Torrey Pines Bridge

The City of Del Mar, California, owns and maintains the North Torrey Pines Bridge. Located at the north edge of the Torrey Pines State Reserve, this bridge carries County Highway S21/Coast Highway 101. CTLGroup was retained to evaluate the bridge substructure to provide bridge retrofit services while maintaining the historic design of the bridge and providing additional service life.

CTLGroup assessed the overall condition of the bridge using nondestructive testing techniques and evaluated the condition of existing concrete materials and mechanical properties. The scope of work included seismic retrofitting of the bridge by replacing the superstructure, strengthening the abutements, isolating the columns adjacent to railroad spans, and adding structural confinement for existing columns. Rehabilitation also included a plan to manage future potential corrosion.
