Structural + Transportation Laboratory

Our Structural and Transportation Laboratory is one of the largest of its kind in the world and is actively seeking a technician to join their team! Why not get paid for breaking things by testing structural components such as steel castings, cables, and rails to failure? This is a nonexempt position, eligible for overtime pay.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Assemble, adjust and calibrate test equipment
  • Monitor and maintain hydraulic systems and controls to ensure test specifications are met
  • Investigate unusual test results and report conclusions to project manager
  • Fabricate and/or prepare test specimens and test fixtures
  • Receive and organize lab material using various equipment
  • Read blueprints or other drawings to set up test equipment and build test frames
  • Install appropriate measuring and data collection equipment and many other duties as assigned



  • A minimum of 2 years relevant experience such as mechanical equipment maintenance, automotive mechanic, machinist, welding, hydraulics, construction


  • Experience with preventative maintenance of hydraulics, electronics, and/or general machinery
  • Mechanical/Electrical aptitude
  • Experience using MS Word and Excel

Additional Activities

  • Some work may be performed in confined spaces and at heights in excess of six feet
  • Some work may be performed on swing stages, scaffolding, or lifts
  • Ability to lift and carry 20 to 50 pounds occasionally and/or 10 to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly and to occasionally push/pull up to 100 pounds
  • Some work is performed in a laboratory environment or in the field where the following conditions may apply: exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, variations in temperature and humidity, fumes and various types of equipment listed above
  • Climbing may be required
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) whenever necessary
  • May require working overtime
  • Travel is generally not required for this position
