Principal Engineer, Group Director

Full-Time Position In Skokie, Illinois (HQ)

Materials Technology

CTLGroup is looking for a Principal Engineer and Group Director for our Materials Technology group. Reporting to Vice President of Materials Technology, some of your responsibilities include:

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead investigations and perform expert technical consultation on matters involving metallic components, structures, equipment, and products, including the analysis of failures related to design, manufacture, fabrication, installation, construction, operation, distress, and deterioration
  • Execute work which may include one or more of the following: field and laboratory evaluations and investigations, calculations, computational analysis, research, engineering test methods and procedures, supervision of testing, and litigation support activities
  • Analyze and interpret analytical, computational, and experimental results and prepare reports
  • Provide expert testimony, as needed and requested by clients, about investigation findings when matters are in dispute
  • Generate and implement creative engineering and scientific solutions to meet client needs
  • Develop fellow staff within materials technology group and Materials Division through mentoring/coaching
  • Help to ensure group profitability by generating business to sustain self-productivity and the productivity of others within the group
  • Explore and develop new markets in area of expertise and leverage business opportunities through industry involvement
  • Build and sustain effective relationships with current and potential clients through regular communication
  • Define the potential scope of projects through analysis and evaluation of alternate solutions to the client’s issues or problem
  • Manage multiple projects within defined scope of work, specified timeline, and budget
  • Work closely with Structures & Mechanics Division staff to determine analysis needs of complex, multidisciplinary projects
  • Write proposals, qualify project and client opportunities, and attain approval to proceed
  • Schedule, coordinate, and delegate project work.; ensure that needed materials and/or outside service vendors are available, that the project is conducted timely and with quality standards, and that customer expectations are exceeded
  • Select and train project team members
  • Demonstrate awareness of employee safety by performing duties in accordance to company and OSHA guidelines
  • Actively participate in professional organizations and technical committees to promote self and CTLGroup as industry thought leaders
  • Participate in professional development activities in order to maintain and enhance work knowledge and skills


Education and Licensure

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree, PhD preferred, in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or similar field
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in a U.S. jurisdiction


  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience with business development and project management (2 year preferred)

Additional Activities

  • Position requires some work to be completed outdoors with potential exposure to inclement weather conditions. Some work may be performed in confined spaces and at heights in excess of six feet. Some work is performed in a laboratory environment or in the field where the following conditions may apply: exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, variations in temperature and humidity, fumes and various types of equipment listed above
  • May require the use of suspended scaffolding
  • Must have the ability to climb
  • Position requires medical clearance for the use of respirators
  • May require working additional hours
  • Up to 35% travel may be required
