Full-Time Position In Skokie, Illinois (HQ), Washington, D.C., or Texas

Architecture + Building Science

CTLGroup is currently accepting applications for the position of Principal Architect to join our Building Science team. The successful candidate should be a recognized expert in the design and performance of building systems and materials, with particular knowledge of building enclosure performance. Specialties of interest include, but are not limited to: brick and stone masonry; stucco; natural and synthetic cladding systems; curtain walls; roofing systems; archaic building systems and materials; repairs and rehabilitation; historic preservation; and deep energy retrofit and sustainability. The Principal Architect position will be based in our Skokie, Illinois headquarters, although placement in our Washington, DC and Texas offices may also be considered for strong candidates.


Education and Licensure

  •  Master of Architecture degree with at least 10 years of relevant experience
  •  Licensed Architect in the State of Illinois or another U.S. jurisdiction (with the ability to obtain licensure in Illinois within six months).


  • The successful candidate must have experience investigating and solving problems associated with existing buildings.
  • Work duties for the position may involve field inspections and testing, preparation of investigation reports, architectural design, development of plans and specifications, project budgeting and scheduling, construction inspection and administration, and consultation with clients.
  • Prior experience providing expert witness testimony is desired.
  • Experience with BIM and other technologies to improve processes and work flow is a plus.


  • The successful candidate must be a seller-doer with demonstrated prior business development success.
  • Proven contributor to group profitability through project initiation and personal project contributions, building and sustaining effective relationships with current and potential clients, and exploring and developing new markets with other senior staff.
  • Ability to aid in the development of junior staff through mentoring/coaching, while scheduling, coordinating, and delegating project work. He or she must be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, display a professional attitude, exercise timely and sound judgment, and be willing and able to work independently both in the field and in the office.

Additional Activities

  • Up to 30% travel may be required.
  • May require physical exertion, including lifting up to 50 pounds, working in confined spaces, or working at heights in excess of six feet.
  • Sitting and using a computer for prolonged periods of time.
  • Work performed in a laboratory environment or in the field under exposure to chemicals, noise, dust, fumes, and variations in temperature and humidity.
