Canned Crush: Guidelines Help MDOT Crank Out Recycling Projects
The recycling of concrete pavements (breaking and removing old concrete slabs, crushing them to size and reusing the crushed material in some other pavement application) has been used in the U.S. since at least the 1970s.
Crushed concrete aggregate (CCA)—the material produced from recycling concrete pavement— exhibits properties different from natural aggregate, largely because the resultant crushed material is composed of both the original natural aggregate and reclaimed mortar.
MDOT recently conducted an extensive research study on CCA and produced a guideline document to help the agency effectively use CCA in the construction of the state’s transportation infrastructure, with particular focus on pavement applications. Selected aspects of that guideline document are highlighted in this article.
Thomas Van Dam, Principal Engineer and Chair of CTLGroup’s Transportation Practice Group, co-authored this article with Kurt Smith and John Staton, which appeared in the May 2012 issue of Roads & Bridges magazine (Vol. 50, No. 5, p S12).
