40-year-old architectural Precast primes Pyramid for LEED Platinum
Exposed, white quartz-aggregate cladding was cited with a “cool roof” effect as Transamerica Pyramid owners pursued LEED-EB (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design-Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance) Platinum certification for their San Francisco landmark. Completed in 1972, the 853-ft. tower is enclosed with 3,920 precast pieces totaling 360,000 sq. ft. of surface.
Emily Lorenz, LEED AP BD+C., Materials Consulting at CTLGroup, was quoted extensively about the benefits of reducing the heat-island effect in a December, 2011 Concrete Products article.
“In addition to lessening cooling loads, reducing the heat-island effect reduces human-health risks created by ground-level ozone, or smog. There is an increased risk of asthma whenever the temperature is over 75 degrees,” said Lorenz.
