Advanced non-destructive evaluation of in-service structures and machinery
CTLGroup engineers use acoustic emission (AE) monitoring to diagnose and solve issues with in-service structures and machinery and to investigate the microstructural origins of material behavior. AE is a specialized non-destructive evaluation technique in which stress waves (typically in the form of ultrasound) produced by a materials under load are analyzed to gain insight into material-structural phenomena such as cracking, fiber breakage, stick-slip behavior, and anomalous audible noises.
AE is unique among non-destructive evaluation methods in that it is a “passive” technique: the stress waves are emitted spontaneously by the test object while under external loads (e.g. service or proof loads), as opposed to energy for measurements being injected into the object as in ultrasonic testing or radiography.
CTLGroup’s AE expertise has been deployed to diagnose and solve issues with movable structures (e.g. drawbridges), heavy machinery, and industrial process equipment. In addition, CTLGroup can include AE as part of evaluation of innovative materials, such as application-specific concrete blends.
