Use
Sulfate environments are aggressive toward some concretes. Sulfate in cement plays a critical role in setting and strength development.

Instructions
Sample mass should be at least 10 grams (1/2 oz). Cement samples must be ground to pass a No. 100 sieve. Other materials should be oven-dried and then ground to pass the No. 100 sieve. If sample is not finely ground, a larger mass should be submitted to assure that a representative specimen will be analyzed. Proper sampling procedures should be followed. Water samples should reach us within 24 hours following collection.

Results Produced
Weight percentage sulfur is expressed as SO3 (sulfur trioxide) or expressed as SO4 (sulfate). Sulfur nearly always occurs in cement and related materials as SO4 but is commonly expressed as SO3.

Results are usually available within 10 working days.

Alternate Tests
XRF can provide data for sulfur as SO3 for solid samples where the SO3 is in the range .5 to 46 percent and the sulfur is not a sulfide or elemental sulfur. Gypsum: ASTM C 471 and DTA (differential thermal analysis). Limestone and lime: ASTM C 114. Soils: U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.
