ASTM C 1565-04 Standard Test Method for Determination of PACK-Set Index of Portland CementLab ID 28

Use
Pack set index is a relative measure of flowability of dry powder and its tendency to settle into a solid, non-flowing state due to consolidation in storage or shipping. Also called "silo set."

Instructions
Sample mass should be at least 200 grams (1/2 lbs).

Results Produced
Five measurements of one specimen produce an average Pack Set Index number ranging from 1 (no tendency to pack set) to greater than 25 (severe pack set likely).

Time for Results
Results are usually available within 3 working days.

Related Tests
X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy, and differential thermal analysis are useful to determine the causes of pack set.
