ASTM C 1218 Water-Soluble Chloride in Mortar and ConcreteLab ID 138

Use
Specification limits in concrete are intended to minimize rebar corrosion. Penetration of deicer salt and seawater can be assessed by profiling chloride concentration at various positions in the sample.

Instructions
Sample mass should be at least 25 grams (1 oz) of dried, finely powdered sample. Samples should be oven-dried and ground to pass a No. 20 sieve. Submit the concrete mix design if results will be expressed as Cl? percentage of cement. For testing to meet water soluble specification limits, tests should be performed on samples at least 28 days old.

Results Produced
Chloride (Cl?) is determined and reported as weight percentage of the sample. For cement products, chloride can also be reported as percentage of the cement component if the content is provided or determined.

Time for Results
Results are usually available within 4 to 10 working days.
