ASTM C 1324 Examination and Analysis of Hardened Masonry MortarLab ID 135

Use
Quantitative analysis of mortar to determine composition and proportions of constituents. Can be used to determine mortar type and as an aid in evaluating durability problems. Also used to determine condition and composition of historic mortar.

Instructions
Sample submitted should have a minimum mass of 25g. Larger, intact fragments are preferred. A full-width, full-depth mortar joint is ideal. For some purposes, cores are acceptable. Note: Petrographic examination (ASTM C 856) is required to determine if materials are present that will interfere with the chemical analysis. This examination is included in ASTM C 1324.

Results Produced
Detailed report containing petrographic and chemical analysis data. Chemical analysis data includes mortar type (by proportion), ratio of sand-to-cementitious material, with sand and cement content reported in percent by dry weight of sample. Other information may include unit weight and extent of cement hydration. Petrographic data may include tabulation of mineralogy of the paste and aggregates, volume and gradation of aggregate, estimation of air content, internal paste structure, presence of mineral admixtures, and identification of deleterious reactions.

Time for Results
Results are usually available within 15 to 20 working days.

Alternate Tests
None. Replaces combination of ASTM C 856 and ASTM C 1084 for mortar analysis.

Related Tests
ASTM C 457, ASTM C 823, ASTM C1084
