Poole Accepts the Wason Medal for Materials Research at ACI Spring Convention in Tampa
Jonathan Poole, Senior Engineer and Group Manager of CTLGroup’s Austin, Texas office, received the Wason Medal for Materials Research at the ACI Spring Convention in Tampa, FL on April 3rd, 2011, 5:15 – 6:30 p.m.
Mr. Poole was joined by Kyle A. Riding, Anton K. Shindler, Maria C. G. Juenger, and Kevin J. Folliard who also received the award for their part in co-authoring a paper entitled "Effects of Construction Time and Coarse Aggregate on Bridge Deck Cracking."
The paper presented an experimental method for examining the effects of concrete materials properties and bridge deck construction methods on cracking, which is a major contributor to chloride penetration and subsequent corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel. Cracking and corrosion impacts the long-term durability of the concrete structure. The goal of this project was to develop a method of quantifying how materials and construction methods can influence the thermal stresses in bridge decks, which has provided a better understanding of the mechanisms by which concrete cracks at early ages.
The extensive testing that was required included rigid cracking frame tests, coefficient of thermal expansion, and semi-adiabatic calorimetry. The team found that the coefficient of thermal expansion of coarse aggregate and casting time were important variables that affected the early-age cracking tendency of bridge deck concrete.
The paper, which was published in the September-October issue of the ACI Materials Journal in 2009, is available here.
