Self-Curing Warehouse Floors?
CTLGroup staff members Howard Kanare and Matthew D’Ambrosia have been participating in the design and execution of a two-year study to monitor curling in a large commercial warehouse floor. The study was organized by Concrete Construction Magazine and the floor was constructed by Scurto Cement of Gilberts, Illinois.
Recent surprising findings have been evaluated and published in an article co-authored by Kanare in the August 2010 issue of Concrete Construction Magazine. Microscopy and moisture transmission studies at CTLGroup laboratories revealed that the dense, hard-troweled surface achieved with large ride-in trowel machines essentially functions as a curing compound that retains significant moisture in the slab for an extended period of time. These findings have important implications for standard curing requirements and impact our understanding of drying rates for commercial floors, which are critical for installation of floor coverings.
