A Case Study: Structural Health Monitoring of Huey P. Long Bridge
The Huey L. Long Bridge crosses the Mississippi River near New Orleans. As the only railroad bridge within 100 miles, and carrying an increasing load of trains and autos, it could not be closed.
Structural health monitoring became important to understanding the loading as the bridge was widened while also kept open.
Asad Bassam, Structural Engineering & Mechanics, and Bernie Schulze, Principal Metallurgist & Manager, Structural & Transportation Laboratory, co-authored this July 2011 ISHMII Monitor article.
