Contractor Plans to Offer Fix for Troubled Seattle Tower
Dr. W. Gene Corley, Senior Vice President of CTLGroup, was quoted in an April 26, 2010 Engineering News-Record article regarding the corrosion of the post-tensioned slab system in the McGuire Apartments building in Seattle, WA.
The Department of Planning and Development in Seattle believes that the building can be fixed, and is currently engaged in a debate with the building’s owner (Carpenter’s Tower LLC) in an attempt to save the 26-story old building. Carpenter’s Tower, however, believes that corrosion has compromised the structural integrity of the building in a way that cannot be economically fixed, and is pushing for demolition.
Corley is representing CTLGroup as a structural consultant to the owner. Segments of his expert diagnosis were included in the article, including a warning that there is a possibility of “material fall hazards” beginning as early as next year.
