New 189.1 Will Change How Buildings are Built

A new standard for the design of high-performance green buildings was released on January 22, 2010.


Martha VanGeem, PE, LEED AP, principal engineer in building science and sustainability at CTLGroup, is a member of the ASHRAE/USGBC/IESNA Standards Project Committee 189.1 on the design of high-performance green buildings, as well as numerous committees of the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers, ASTM International, the Green Building Initiative and the U.S. Green Building Council.

She answered questions in a March 1, 2010 interview with Building Design & Construction regarding the details of Standard 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, to which she was a major contributor.
