Feng Presents at First Congress of Construction – Cemento Panamá; Clark and O'Brien to Attend

Xiuping Feng

Xiuping Feng, Ph.D., Materials Consulting, presented a session at the First Congress of Construction – Cemento Panamá on September 1 in Panamá at Hotel Riu Panamá Plaza, Salón Barcelona. Boyd Clark, Ph.D., Senior Principal Materials Scientist & Director, Materials Laboratory Services, and Karin O'Brien, LEED AP, will also be in attendance.

Cemento Panama, committed to the development and promotion of the industry, organized the First Congress of Construction: "Building a World Class Country." This conference aims to promote advances in the construction industry focused on sustainability, durability and constructive systems. It will be attended by leading national and international exhibitors.

Feng's presentation, titled "How to Correctly and Efficiently Evaluate Concrete Durability," is described below:

There are various aspects of concrete durability, and for each specific durability issue, there are many testing methods to evaluate the concrete performance. This 45-minute presentation will start by introducing the test methods for concrete constituent  materials that contribute to concrete durability properties, such as sulfate resistance of cement, soundness of aggregates, and mitigation of alkali-silica reaction by mineral admixtures. These test methods typically include ASTM C 1012, ASTM C 88, ASTM C 441, ASTM C 1260, ASTM C 289 and ASTM C 295.

The second part of the presentation will focus on the common ASTM test methods used to evaluate concrete durability in hardened concrete. Topics will include carbonation, chloride diffusion, abrasion, freeze-thaw resistance and alkali-silica reaction (ASR). These test methods may include, but are not limited to, ASTM C 1543, ASTM C 1556, ASTM C 1202, ASTM C 131, ASTM C 666, ASTM C 672, ASTM C 1567 and ASTM C 1293. A description of these test methods will be presented, and common modifications and potential errors in conducting these test methods will be discussed, based on CTLGroup’s  many years of experience working with concrete durability testing.

Key issues related to the interpretation of durability test results and correlations between the different methods to evaluate durability will also be presented and discussed.
