Investigation of Cracking in Cooling Water Intake Structure
Consulting Services Lab Services
CTLGroup was hired to examine cracks in the top and sides of this generating station's cooling water intake structure. The owner and the NRC were concerned with the structural integrity of the tunnel, which had recently undergone a program of concrete crack repairs.
In order to evaluate the structural integrity, CTLGroup conducted an examination of the cracks and determined their cause. The firm also provided recommendations regarding the long-term durability of the concrete.
CTLGroup investigators reviewed documents related to the original 1974 construction of the intake tunnel, in order to evaluate the level of testing and inspection historically conducted in this safety-related structure. The owner then used their reports as an independent consultant's assessment of the intake structure, which was being reviewed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
